Hypernormalisation

Sometimes you are reading an article or a post that triggers you to further explore, to broaden your thoughts. One substack that has this effect on me regulary, is Ribbonfarm Studio, a Substack managed by Venkatesh Rao. His writings always invite you to explore further and to question your own views and ideas.

A result is the title of this post. Venkatesh Rao wrote about Hypernormalisation in his post called The New Systems of Survival.

It was the first time I came across this word and the idea behind it. Hypernormalisation was first coined by Alexei Yurchak. In my own words, Hypernormalisation is the situation where a society is in a state of delusion. Things are not going well, but society pretends otherwise and accepts the delusional state as real. Specific treats of hypernormalisation are: 1) simplification of complex issues, 2) pretence becomes reality, 3) loss of alternatives, 4) disconnect from reality and 5) collective pretence.

In that same piece Venkatesh Roa referred to a documentary of Adam Curtis, also called Hypernormalisation. In this documentary Adam Curtis explores the concept of Hypernormalisation. It is a interesting documentary, that gives additional food for thought, although his examples are not always convincing. I will explore the construct of Hypernormaisation further in future posts.
